Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek 14 Days Overview

The Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek 14 Days is an adventurous and culturally rich journey through one of Nepal’s quieter and less-explored Himalayan trekking regions. Located in the Ramechhap area, the trek takes you around the beautiful Numbur Himal region through remote mountain villages, dense forests, alpine pastures, sacred lakes, high passes, Sherpa settlements, and traditional cheese-making areas. It is an excellent choice for trekkers looking for an off-the-beaten-path trek in Nepal away from the busy trails of Everest and Annapurna.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Shivalaya, a historic gateway to the Numbur Cheese Circuit and the traditional approach toward the Everest region. From Shivalaya, the trail gradually climbs through Khahare and Panipakha, passing forests, terraced farmland, rivers, waterfalls, and traditional mountain settlements. As you gain elevation, the landscape changes from green hills and forests to open alpine terrain.

One of the most spectacular sections of the Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek is the journey toward Maanedanda and Panch Pokhari. At Panch Pokhari, you reach a beautiful high-altitude area associated with sacred lakes and mountain landscapes. The surrounding alpine environment provides a peaceful atmosphere and impressive views of the Himalayan ranges. Published trekking routes place Panch Pokhari at around 4,500 m, making this one of the highest points of the circuit.

The trail then continues toward Tare and Ngeju, crossing challenging high-altitude terrain. Depending on the route, the circuit includes the Gyazo La Pass, which rises to approximately 4,880 m. From the high pass, trekkers can experience dramatic mountain landscapes before descending toward Ngeju and the remote Likhu Valley.

Another special feature of this trek is its connection with the traditional yak and chauri cheese-making culture. The Numbur Cheese Circuit takes its name from the region’s long-standing cheese production tradition. The historic Thodung cheese factory, established in 1957, is widely associated with the development of yak cheese production in Nepal.

As the trek continues, you pass through traditional settlements such as Lhachhewar, Kyama, Gumdel, Serding and Lapchane. These villages offer opportunities to experience local hospitality and observe traditional Himalayan lifestyles. The region is home to Sherpa and other local communities whose culture, farming practices, religious traditions, and mountain lifestyle remain an important part of the trekking experience.

The Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek 14 Days is therefore much more than a mountain walk. It combines wilderness, high-altitude landscapes, traditional villages, sacred lakes, Himalayan culture, camping, and local food into one memorable adventure.

If you are searching for a remote Nepal trekking experience, a cultural trek in the lower Everest region, or an alternative to the crowded classic trekking routes, the Numbur Cheese Circuit is an excellent choice.

Today your Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek officially begins. After breakfast, start walking from Shivalaya toward Khahare. Today, the trail climbs higher toward Panipakha, one of the early camping locations on the Numbur Cheese Circuit. You will walk through beautiful pine, rhododendron and other Himalayan forests while passing streams, farmland and alpine landscapes. As you gain altitude, the vegetation gradually becomes thinner and the mountain environment feels more remote. Panipakha provides a peaceful campsite surrounded by nature and is an excellent place to experience the wilderness of the Numbur region.

Trek Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Panipakha Camp
Altitude: 3,105 m

After breakfast, continue climbing from Panipakha toward Maanedanda. Today’s trail becomes more alpine as you move through forests and open mountain landscapes. You will notice fewer trees as the elevation increases, while the views of surrounding hills and Himalayan peaks become more impressive. The trail can be physically demanding because of the steady ascent, so maintaining a comfortable pace and taking regular breaks is important. Maanedanda offers a beautiful high-altitude camping environment.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Maanedanda Camp
Altitude: 3,940 m

Today is one of the most spectacular days of the Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek 14 Days as you trek toward Panch Pokhari. The trail continues through high alpine terrain with rocky paths, open pastures and dramatic mountain scenery. Panch Pokhari is known for its group of sacred high-altitude lakes and is an important cultural and pilgrimage area. At approximately 4,515 m, this is a demanding day, so you will walk slowly and take sufficient breaks. Tonight, you will camp in the peaceful high-altitude environment near Panch Pokhari.

Trek Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Camp
Altitude: 4,515 m

After breakfast, leave Panch Pokhari and continue toward Tare. The trail crosses rugged high-altitude landscapes before gradually descending toward lower alpine areas. The combination of high mountains and remote wilderness makes today’s walk a memorable part of the circuit. After reaching Tare, settle into camp and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6–7 hours
Overnight: Tare Camp
Altitude: 4,140 m

Today, continue toward Ngeju, with the trail involving both climbs and descents through remote Himalayan terrain. The route can include the challenging Gyazo La Pass, which reaches around 4,880 m on commonly published versions of the circuit, before descending toward Ngeju. From the higher areas, you can enjoy impressive views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you descend, the landscape gradually changes and you may see yak pastures and remote mountain settlements.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6–7 hours
Overnight: Ngeju Camp
Altitude: 3,690 m

Today, you will descend from Ngeju toward Lhachhewar, a traditional Himalayan village. The trail passes through forests and follows remote mountain valleys, providing a completely different experience from the high alpine terrain of the previous days. As you lose altitude, the vegetation becomes greener and the climate becomes more comfortable. Lhachhewar is known for its traditional community and welcoming local atmosphere, giving you an opportunity to experience authentic rural Himalayan life.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Lhachhewar
Altitude: 2,665 m

After breakfast, continue trekking from Lhachhewar toward Kyama. Today’s trail gradually descends through forests, hills and traditional settlements. The route offers beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape while providing opportunities to observe local farming and village life. Today, continue the journey toward Gumdel, walking through forested trails and rural mountain landscapes. The lower elevation makes the walking more comfortable compared with the high-altitude sections of the trek. Along the route, you can enjoy views of hills, farmland, forests and traditional houses. Gumdel provides another opportunity to experience the lifestyle and hospitality of the local communities along the Numbur Cheese Circuit.

Trek Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Gumdel
Altitude: 2,255 m

Today, the trail begins climbing again as you leave Gumdel and head toward Serding. The route passes through forests and mountain terrain with increasingly beautiful views of the surrounding peaks. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and prepare for the final trekking sections of the circuit.

Overnight: Serding

After breakfast, continue from Serding toward Lapchane, passing through Thodung. You can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and reflect on the cultural experiences of the trek.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6 hours
Overnight: Lapchane
Altitude: 3,150 m

Today is the final trekking day of your Numbur Cheese Circuit Trek. You will descend from Lapchane toward Those, following trails through forests, villages, farmland and lower Himalayan landscapes.
