Everest Three Passes Trekking Overview

The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the most adventurous treks in Nepal. It is made for people who want to see the Everest region in a deeper way. This trek is special because it takes you across three high mountain passes: Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m). Crossing these passes is not easy, but it gives you a chance to see some of the most amazing views of the Himalayas.

During the trek, you will see famous mountains like Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and Cho Oyu. The views are wide and clear, with snowy peaks shining under the blue sky. You will also visit popular places such as Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and Gokyo Lakes, which makes the journey even more exciting.

This trek is not only about mountains. It also lets you experience the culture of the Sherpa people. You will pass through small villages, stay in teahouses, and see monasteries filled with prayer flags and wheels. The Sherpa people are kind and welcoming, and you will learn about their simple but strong lifestyle in the mountains.

The trek usually takes about 18 to 21 days to complete. It starts from Lukla, after a short flight from Kathmandu, and then follows trails that go up and down through valleys, rivers, forests, and glaciers. Because of the high altitude, it is very important to walk slowly, drink enough water, and take rest days to avoid altitude sickness.

Everest Three Passes Trek is more challenging than the normal Everest Base Camp trek. It needs good fitness and a strong will. But for those who are ready, it offers a full adventure that includes everything – high passes, big mountains, lakes, glaciers, and rich culture.

In the end, the trek gives you a deep connection with nature and people. It is tough, but it is also rewarding. You will return home with stories, photos, and memories that will stay with you forever. The Everest Three Passes Trek is truly a journey of a lifetime for those who dream of exploring the highest mountains in the world.

Everest Three Passes Trekking Itinerary

Expand All

Your adventure to the Everest Three Passes Trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu, the busy and colorful capital city of Nepal. As soon as you land, you will be welcomed at the airport and taken to your hotel in the city. The drive from the airport to the hotel usually takes about 6 km and gives you your first glimpse of life in Nepal. Kathmandu is full of narrow streets, old temples, and lively shops that make it a very interesting place. After check-in, you can take rest from your flight or enjoy a short walk around the local area. In the evening, you will meet your trekking guide who will explain the plan for the next 18 days and answer any questions you may have.

After breakfast in Kathmandu, you will drive toward Ramechhap, Manthali, where most flights to Lukla now depart. The journey covers around 132 km and usually takes 4 to 5 hours by private vehicle. Along the way, you will pass through green hills, small villages, rivers, and winding mountain roads. The drive itself is a nice chance to see the countryside of Nepal outside the busy capital city. Manthali is a quiet town surrounded by hills and farming fields, very different from Kathmandu’s busy lifestyle. Once you arrive, you will check into a simple guesthouse and have time to relax. The evening will be spent preparing for the exciting flight to Lukla the next morning, which is the gateway to your Everest Three Passes Trek adventure.

Early in the morning, you will take a short but scenic flight from Manthali to Lukla. The flight is about 25 minutes and gives you the first aerial views of the Himalayas. Lukla, at 2,840 m, is the starting point of your trek. After meeting the porter team and getting ready, you will begin your walk toward Phakding. The trek is about 8 km and usually takes 3 to 4 hours. The trail goes gently downhill through small Sherpa villages, prayer flags, and mani walls carved with Buddhist prayers. You will also cross a suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. Phakding is a peaceful village surrounded by green hills, where you will spend the night in a cozy teahouse near the river.

Today is one of the most exciting trekking days as you head toward Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest. The trek covers about 10 to 11 km and takes around 6 to 7 hours. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River and crosses several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Bridge. Along the way, you will walk through pine forests, small Sherpa villages, and see mani stones decorated with prayers. As you climb higher, you may get your first clear view of Mount Everest if the weather is good. The last part of the trek is a steep uphill walk before reaching Namche Bazaar, a lively town with shops, bakeries, and teahouses. Tonight, you will rest here to adjust to the higher altitude.

Today is a rest and acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar, but rest does not mean staying still. To adjust to the altitude, you will take a short hike around the town and nearby viewpoints. One popular walk is to the Everest View Hotel, about 3 to 4 km from Namche, where you can see Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks shining in the distance. You can also visit the Sherpa Culture Museum or the local monastery to learn more about the traditions of the region. In the afternoon, you may stroll around the lively market of Namche, which is known as the trading hub of the Khumbu. This extra day helps your body get ready for higher altitudes in the coming days of the trek.

Today’s trek takes you from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche, one of the most spiritual places in the Everest region. The walk covers about 10 km and usually takes 5 to 6 hours. The trail first follows a gentle path with wide mountain views, then descends toward the Dudh Koshi River. After crossing a suspension bridge, you will begin a steady uphill climb through pine and rhododendron forests. If the weather is clear, you will enjoy beautiful views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam along the way. Tengboche is famous for its large monastery, the biggest in the Khumbu region, where monks perform daily prayers. Spending the evening here offers both peace and inspiration, with the sound of chanting mixing with the mountain air.

Today is a longer trekking day as you move closer to the high Himalayas. The journey from Tengboche to Chhukung covers around 16 km and takes 7 to 8 hours. The trail first descends through forests and rivers before gently climbing toward Pangboche village, where you can see traditional Sherpa houses and fields. From here, the path continues toward Dingboche at 4,410 m, a lovely village surrounded by stone walls that protect crops from the cold wind. After a short rest and lunch, you will continue trekking to Chhukung, which takes about 3 km more. The trail opens into wide valleys with beautiful views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Island Peak. Chhukung is a quiet settlement where trekkers stay before crossing the first big pass of the trek.

Today is an important acclimatization day in Chhukung to prepare your body for higher altitudes. Instead of resting all day, you will take a short hike to nearby viewpoints, which helps with better adjustment. A popular option is a hike to Chhukung Ri at 5,550 m, about 4 to 5 km round trip. The climb is steep but rewarding, as you can enjoy panoramic views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, and Island Peak from the top. Spending time here allows you to truly feel the closeness of the Himalayan giants. After the hike, you will return to Chhukung for lunch and spend the afternoon resting, exploring the village, or enjoying the peaceful mountain setting. This day ensures you are ready for the challenging Kongma La Pass ahead.

Today is a challenging but rewarding day as you cross the Kongma La Pass at 5,535 m. The trek from Chhukung to the pass covers about 12 km and takes 7 to 8 hours. The trail begins with a steady climb through moraine and rocky terrain. As you gain altitude, the views of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam become clearer. Reaching the pass gives a sense of achievement and a chance to take amazing photos of the surrounding peaks. After descending from the pass, you will continue for a few kilometers toward Lobuche, a small village at 4,940 m. Tonight, you will rest in a teahouse here, enjoying the quiet and the stunning Himalayan scenery while preparing for the next day’s trek toward Everest Base Camp.

Today you will continue trekking toward Gorak Shep at 5,164 m, covering about 6 km from Lobuche in 2 to 3 hours. The trail passes rocky paths and moraines with breathtaking views of Everest and surrounding peaks. After reaching Gorak Shep, you will rest briefly and then hike about 3 to 4 km to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). At the base camp, you can see the massive Khumbu Icefall and the surrounding high mountains, which makes the effort very special. After spending time at the base camp and taking photos, you will return to Gorak Shep to rest for the night. This day is physically demanding but gives a true sense of achievement being so close to the world’s highest mountain.

Early in the morning, you will hike from Gorak Shep (5,164 m) to Kala Patthar (5,545 m), a short but steep trail of about 3 to 4 km. This is one of the best viewpoints to see Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse up close, especially during sunrise when the mountains glow in golden light. After spending time enjoying the view and taking photos, you will descend back toward Gorak Shep and continue trekking down about 6 km to Lobuche (4,940 m). The descent is steady but allows you to rest your legs after the steep climb. Tonight, you will stay in Lobuche, reflecting on the incredible experience of seeing the highest peaks in the world from Kala Patthar.

Today is a challenging day as you trek from Lobuche (4,940 m) toward Cho La Pass (5,420 m) and then descend to Thagnak (4,700 m). The total distance is around 12 km and can take 7 to 8 hours. The trail first climbs steeply over rocky terrain toward the pass, where you can enjoy views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. After reaching the pass, you will carefully descend toward Thagnak, walking along glacier paths and moraine valleys. Thagnak is a small settlement surrounded by stunning peaks and icefalls, offering a peaceful place to rest. Spending the night here allows your body to recover after crossing Cho La Pass and prepares you for the next stage toward Gokyo Lakes.

Today you will trek from Thagnak (4,700 m) to Gokyo (4,750 m), covering about 8 km in 4 to 5 hours. The trail passes along the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the Everest region, offering impressive views of icefalls and rugged peaks. You will also see turquoise lakes, including smaller ones on the way to Gokyo, which make the landscape unique and peaceful. The village of Gokyo is a quiet settlement with several teahouses and a backdrop of towering mountains like Cho Oyu and Everest. You can explore the village and enjoy the clear mountain air. This day is less steep than previous days, giving you time to relax, enjoy the scenery, and prepare for the hike to Gokyo Ri tomorrow for panoramic views.

Today starts with an early morning hike from Gokyo (4,750 m) to Gokyo Ri (5,360 m), about 4 km round trip. The climb is steep but the views from the top are breathtaking, showing Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and the entire Gokyo Lake system. After enjoying the sunrise and taking photos, you will descend back to Gokyo and continue trekking about 6 km to Dragnag (4,700 m). The trail passes small villages, yak pastures, and rocky paths. Dragnag is a quiet village surrounded by mountains and glaciers, offering a peaceful place to rest. This day combines adventure, high mountain views, and a chance to enjoy the serene landscape of the Everest region before the next high pass.

Today is another challenging day as you trek from Dragnag (4,700 m) toward Renjo La Pass (5,360 m) and then descend to Lungden (4,600 m). The total distance is about 12 km and takes 7 to 8 hours. The trail climbs steadily through rocky paths and moraine to reach the pass, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest, Makalu, and the Gokyo Lakes. After reaching the pass, you will carefully descend toward Lungden, walking through wide valleys and glacial paths. Lungden is a small, quiet village surrounded by mountains, providing a peaceful place to rest. This day is physically demanding, but the views and experience of crossing the third high pass of the trek make it very rewarding.

Today you will begin your descent from Lungden (4,600 m) back toward Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), covering about 16 km in 7 to 8 hours. The trail descends gradually through wide valleys, small streams, and yak pastures. You will pass villages and terraced fields along the way, seeing how Sherpa people live and farm in the high mountains. The trek is easier than climbing the high passes, but it still requires attention on rocky paths. As you approach Namche, the view of Everest and surrounding peaks continues to inspire. Arriving in Namche Bazaar, you will stay in a comfortable teahouse and rest. This day allows your body to recover while enjoying the beauty of the mountains and local culture one more time.

Today you will trek from Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) back to Lukla (2,840 m), covering about 20 km in 7 to 8 hours. The trail descends through forests, small villages, and alongside the Dudh Koshi River. You will cross several suspension bridges and pass through Sherpa settlements where locals continue their daily life. The descent is steady, giving your legs a good workout while allowing you to enjoy views of distant mountains one last time. Reaching Lukla, you will check into a teahouse and spend the evening resting after the long journey. This day is a mix of reflection and enjoyment, as you look back on the amazing scenery, high passes, and cultural experiences of the Everest Three Passes Trek.

On the final day of your Everest Three Passes Trek, you will take a morning flight from Lukla (2,840 m) back to Kathmandu (1,400 m). The flight is about 25 minutes and offers a last aerial view of the snow-covered Himalayas, including Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. After landing, you will travel around 6 km to your hotel in Kathmandu for check-in and rest. This is a perfect time to relax, reflect on the amazing adventure, and enjoy the bustling streets, shops, and local culture of the city. In the evening, you may meet your trekking guide for a farewell discussion, sharing memories and photos from the trek. This day marks the completion of a challenging and unforgettable journey across the Everest region.
